Live Oak — The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously at a Tuesday public hearing for a six month moratorium on new and the expansion of existing landfills in Suwannee County.
According to moratorium number 2012-01 the reason for the moratorium is, “a recent application for a special permit to locate a solid waste facility in the county revealed a discrepancy in the county’s land development regulations.”
It also cites that the grant money received from the Federal Aviation Administration for the Suwannee County Airport could be in jeopardy if the county allowed a solid waste facility within five statute miles of the county airport.
The site for the proposed landfill is about four miles away from the airport.
The commissioners did not discuss the language that will be in the new LDRs but will be scheduling a workshop later this month to iron out the details and the new language of the land development regulations.
This moratorium will affect all completed applications for solid waste facilities in Suwannee County. According to the moratorium, “the ordinance shall take effect upon filing with the secretary of the state.”
The county was set to send the ordinance by certified mail Wednesday.
