Two people escaped with only minor injuries when a light aircraft crashed at an airport yesterday evening.
The Piper Alpha 34 training plane had touched down at Cork Airport just after 3pm when the nose wheel on the aircraft snapped off and the front of the plane crashed to the ground.
After skidding on the tarmac, the plane ground to a halt and the pilot and passenger emerged relatively unscathed but "understandably shaken", according to an airport source.
Earlier this year, six people died and six others were treated in hospital after a small aircraft crashed in dense fog at the same airport.
Airport emergency vehicles were on the runway at the scene of yesterday's incident within seconds and brought the two passengers back to the terminal.
Scheduled flights were delayed and diverted as the training plane was removed from the runway.
"Thankfully it is a minor incident," said Cork Airport's head of marketing, Kevin Cullinane.
"The two people who were on board the plane are safe and sound.
"It appears that the nose wheel collapsed on landing but the plane wasn't going too fast at the time and both passengers are relatively unscathed and walked away from it.
"We had to close the runways but expect to have them open again without too much of a delay after we have removed the airplane," Mr Cullinane said.
