Decommissioned bomber to be hauled along I-5, Oregon

A convoy is scheduled to haul a massive, decommissioned B-1 bomber through the Salem area Tuesday night on Interstate 5.

The once supersonic jet is among the largest loads to be hauled through Oregon, according to Oregon Department of Transportation. It is destined for post-service testing at a Boeing facility in Washington.

A convoy will move the partially-dismantled bomber, which is 135 feet long, 29 feet wide and 15 feet high, north through Oregon on interstates 5 and 205. It's wings have been removed.

The convoy, which includes a Boeing team and pilot vehicles, is expected to cross into Oregon from California tonight. Weather could postpone that to Monday because snow is possible on Siskiyou Pass.

The convoy travels about 45 mph only between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and will take up two lanes of traffic, occasionally pulling over to allow vehicles to pass.

As currently scheduled, it would leave Albany at about milepost 240 no earlier than 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The jet is being moved from Tucson, Ariz., to Renton, Wash.
