CLINTON — Inspectors from the Little Rock office of the Federal Aviation Administration were expected here today to investigate the crash of an experimental aircraft that left two people injured Thursday night.
Stephan James was piloting a Zenith Zodiac aircraft at the Clinton Municipal Airport when the plane went down. He was airlifted to a hospital. Passenger Justin Allen was taken by ambulance to Ozark Health Medical Center in Clinton.
The aircraft took off about 4:40 p.m. Thursday but could not maintain flight, according to Will Dawson of Dawson Aircraft and manager of the airport.
Dawson said James had owned the plane about two years and had flown it a couple of times.
Dawson said his crew heard a popping noise and saw the crashed aircraft about a quarter-mile away.
The crew lifted the plane off James and Allen, Dawson said. James had to be helped out of the wreckage, Dawson said.
James, who is in his early 60s, is an Air Force veteran and a former deputy prosecutor in Van Buren County.
