US Airways leads traffic surge at Vegas airport

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -  More than 3.5 million passengers moved through McCarran International Airport in September, thanks largely to a surge in business at US Airways and American Airlines.

The passenger count for the month was 8.7 percent higher than the same month last year, a sign that southern Nevada's tourism industry is growing despite the region's chronic unemployment.

The airport has serviced more than 31 million people so far this year, an increase of 4.5 percent through the same period in 2010.

U.S. Airways saw its passenger numbers rise nearly 20 percent from 179,855 in September 2010 to 215,036 last month. American Airlines also reported a 12.7 percent increase, and Southwest -- McCarran's largest airline -- saw a 3.6 percent boost.
