Pilot finds marijuana growing in Milan Township, Michigan

It didn't look like ears of corn.

MILAN TOWNSHIP — Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confiscated a large number of marijuana plants Saturday afternoon from two cornfields in rural Milan Township.

Sheriff’s office Chief Pilot Joe Schumacher was flying the Raptor, the sheriff’s helicopter, on a maintenance flight when he observed what appeared to be marijuana plants growing in two corn fields off US-23 between Cone and Plank Rds.

Sheriff’s Deputy Don Duncan responded to the area and checked the first field, confirming what the pilot had seen. Deputies Scott Hedger and Tony Modica and Sgt. Greg Berman also responded to the scene. Mr. Schumacher again flew to the area and guided deputies on the ground to the plants. In all, about 55 mature plants were seized.

The street value of the marijuana is estimated to be $25,000 to $35,000, Sgt. Berman said.

“We loaded up a pickup truck full of plants,” he said.

No arrests have been made. Deputies Duncan and Hedger are continuing the investigation. The Toledo office of the Drug Enforcement Agency is also involved.
