Lufthansa to lift winter capacity less than plan

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- German flagship airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG Wednesday said it will increase capacity by less than previously planned this winter to reflect the first signs of slowing forward bookings, amid growing uncertainty about the state of the global economy.

Lufthansa said it now plans to increase capacity by only 4% in the winter 2011/2012 flight schedule compared with the 6% increase that was planned previously.

"The further development [of demand] will be closely monitored and Lufthansa will flexibly adjust capacity as required," the company said in a statement.

The reduction in capacity comes after the carrier Tuesday issued a profit warning, saying that poor results of its passenger operations in August and increased economic uncertainty are weighing on its business.
