UNI Air to add Taipei-Taitung flights.

Taitung, Aug. 10 (CNA) UNI Air, one of the country's main domestic carriers, is to shift its Pingtung-Taipei capacity to the Taitung-Taipei route due to the impending closure of Pingtung Airport, Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) officials said Wednesday.

Southern Taiwan's Pingtung Airport is to suspend all services Sept. 1 and the last Pingtung-Taipei flight embarked from Pingtung Airport Aug. 8.

The switch to the Taitung-Taipei route will make the most effective use of the carrier's capacity, the CAA officials said.

Chu Kuan-wen, director of the CAA's Air Transport Division, said that in order to fulfill the heavier passenger loads using Taitung Airport on weekends, UNI Air will add two more flights between Taipei City and Taitung County on Fridays and Sundays from Aug. 12.

The move will provide additional travel options for the relatively remote eastern side of the island, Chu said.

Pingtung Airport was established Nov. 28, 1994, but the opening in 2007 of the High Speed Railway sent air travel on Taiwan's western corridor plummeting to an average of just 25 percent of capacity, according to CAA statistics.
