 A U.S. Marshals Service jet is towed to the terminal at Stillwater Regional Airport Wednesday after making a precautionary landing because of smoke and odor in the cockpit.

STILLWATER, Okla. — A U.S. Marshals Service jet carrying three prisoners made a precautionary landing Wednesday at Stillwater Regional Airport after reporting smoke and odor in the cockpit. 

Airport Director Gary Johnson said the plane made an uneventful, southbound landing around 5:15 p.m. on runway 1735, the longest of two runways at the airport.

Eight people, including two pilots, were onboard the Hawker Beechcraft 800 passenger jet, which was evacuated on the runway and towed to the airport terminal.

Johnson said there were no injuries.

U.S. Marshals spokesman Jeff Kelly said the cause of the smoke was not immediately known, but that it was likely an electrical problem.

Kelly said the three inmates were to be driven Wednesday night to the Marshals’ office in Oklahoma City.

Johnson said the flight originated in Bismarck, N.D., and was going to Oklahoma City.

Johnson described the situation as a precautionary rather than emergency landing because the airport did not shutdown to all other traffic but instead kept another runway open.
