This is do to the obvious density altitude issues, and also the long IFR procedures to fly with steep descents and climb gradients required, and expensive fuel, etc etc. Grand Junction is always best. Which as you mentioned, would have taken at least 5 min to achieve the altitude needed to clear the terrain.
