This happened ...He was a high time F-35 test pilot. This happened about 2 miles from my house. Weather was horrible at the time. Looks like he pulled out of two spirals but could not get control in that weather with poor visual ref and iced up instruments.<br />Very sad, had two daughters I believe. Pitot heat not on or broken? Roun...Bad situation. Pitot heat not on or broken? Round dial airspeed kaput and likely lost all indications on the Aspen. Ask me how I know. So, down to stby attitude and maybe vert speed and altimeter. All that going on and with the airframe icing up and somewhere south of 3000 agl. Unfortunately 3,000 hours in an F18 under mostly vfr isn’t the same as where this guy found himself in that 421.
