On June 30, 2022, about 1025 eastern daylight time, an American Champion 8KCAB, N721SD, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Knoxville, Tennessee. The flight instructor and private pilot were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight.
According to the flight instructor and pilot, they were conducting tailwheel landings on runway 08 at Knoxville Downtown Island Airport (DKX), Knoxville, Tennessee. On the third and final landing, after touching down on the runway, they heard a “bang” followed by the airplane veering about 20 ft off the runway centerline before stopping.
A postaccident examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed substantial damage to the airplane’s fuselage and rudder.
The wreckage was retained for further examination.
