Berks County, Pennsylvania: Miss Marilyn flies veterans to the past

Glenn Murphy of Wyalusing, Bradford County, flew to Reading with his 1948 North American Navion (Miss Marilyn) fighter plane that flew in the Korean War.

Murphy shares stories of the plane with veterans from Genesis HealthCare in Cumru Township, where his daughter serves as director of Rehabilitation. They saw the plane Friday at Reading Regional Airport.

About 15 veterans from facilities managed by Genesis HealthCare in Cumru Township took a trip back in time Friday.

Colleen Kononov, director of rehabilitation at Genesis and an Exeter Township resident, invited the veterans on a field trip to the Reading Regional Airport for a special Veterans Day presentation and personal viewing of Miss Marilyn, an aircraft flown during the Korean War. At one time, the plane was used to transport Marilyn Monroe on a tour of American military bases.

The owner of the single-engine plane is Kononov's father, Glenn Murphy of Bradford County.

"He bought the plane about 15 years ago without knowing much about her," she said. "But then, after posting the plane on a website all about the missions they carried out, he was contacted by the pilot who flew her during the war, and (he) found out all about her history. And he has been sharing the story ever since."

Kononov said she thought inviting her father to share the story with veterans from Mifflin Court and the Mifflin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center would be a unique way to honor them for their service.
