The Miami Dade College(MDC) Foundation and the Eig-Watson School of Aviation will host its annual Saul Eig and Lois Eig Watson Scholarship Awards Luncheon at noon, Thursday, April 19, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
The event is by invitation only, but open to the working media.
This scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding students seeking a career in commercial aviation. This year’s winners are: Mariano Barrios, Israfel Carratala, Luis Eduardo Heras, Jorge Molina, and Kathleen Suarez.
The Saul Eig and Lois Eig Watson Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 through the generosity of Lois Watson in memory of Saul Eig. As one of the largest aviation scholarships in the country, this scholarship program has presented more than 179 awards to outstanding students to help defray costs of any additional flight training necessary to achieve their next certificate or rating.
The renowned Eig-Watson School of Aviation at MDC’s Homestead Campus has been providing aviation training for more than 40 years. It was among the first in the nation to be granted AT-CTI (Air Traffic Control Collegiate Training Initiative) status by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The program that covers the most important areas and training required for a successful career in the aviation industry. Associate in Science degrees include aviation administration, aviation maintenance management, and professional pilot technology.
There are also professional certifications, which include air cargo agent, airline/aviation management, airport management, certified flight instructor, and passenger service agent. The Eig-Watson School of Aviation has locations at the MDC Homestead Campus, Miami International Airport, and Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport.
To qualify for the Saul Eig and Lois Eig Watson Scholarship, applicants must have completed at least twelve MDC credits, possess a private pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration, have demonstrated interest in pursuing a degree in professional pilot technology, and have a least a 3.0 GPA.
