The famed Air Force Thunderbirds will return to Barksdale Air Force Base this year for its annual open house and air show April 21-22.
In addition, the show will have a new civilian face, with longtime director Suzy Lehr resigning and the local Military Affairs Council appointing an interim director, Air Force retiree and former B-52 pilot Bill McHugh.
Under Lehr's leadership, the show received international kudos when in 2005 it won the coveted Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award.
McHugh, a longtime MAC volunteer, spent most of his 20-year Air Force career stationed at Barksdale. In uniform, he assisted in planning and putting on the air show from 1999 to 2001.
In addition to the Thunderbirds, the show will include as acts the Black Diamond Jet Demonstration team, formerly known as Heavy Metal; the Jacquie B. Air Show; Jason Newburg; the Shockwave Jet Truck; Kevin Coleman; Red Bull Air Force Kirby Chambliss; and Chuck Aaron.
There also will be ground displays of base and other service aircraft and vintage warbirds.
